Girl Scouts in grades 2-8, met at Jester Park Nature Center for the sold-out Incredible Women in Science event in October. Through hands-on sessions and remarkable presenters, 90 Girl Scouts were inspired to explore STEM fields and careers. Sessions included zoo careers, presented by staff from Blank Park Zoo. Girl Scouts learned why every job at the zoo is important, how the zoo works to help wildlife, and how they can start their own journey toward a career with animals. Girl Scouts also learned about conservation through a session with Polk County Conservation that included a discovery hike focused on conservation efforts and conservation careers. The Iowa State University Insect Zoo helped Girl Scouts learn about entomology (a field many didn’t know existed) – they were able to meet and hold different insect species and learn why they are important for healthy ecosystems. Many Girl Scouts who didn’t know what entomology is left the event declaring their love for insects and excited to learn about this future career path. A love of science is fostered through GSGI events like this and are made possible with the support of community and program partners. GSGI is thankful to everyone participating in this unique event.
