At Girl Scouts of Greater Iowa, we believe that fostering a safe, inclusive, and respectful environment is essential for building strong leaders. On this page, you will find two distinct codes of conduct: one tailored for Girl Scout volunteers and troop leaders, and another for Girl Scout members. Together, these guidelines ensure that everyone involved upholds the highest standards of integrity and support, helping us create a positive and enriching experience for all.

- I will follow the principles of the Girl Scout Promise and Law as listed in this Girl Scouts of Greater Iowa (GSGI) Code of Conduct.
- I will follow the rules outlined by Volunteer Essentials and Safety Activity Checkpoints and the Blue Book that are made to protect others and myself and to help make sure program activities are safe, fun, and successful. This includes no drugs and/or alcohol use in the presence of underage members, at any Girl Scout activities, or on Girl Scout property.
- I will treat other people, myself, property, and equipment with respect.
- I will be considerate of the feelings of others.
- I will be respectful of my fellow Girl Scout members and the families that support them. I will ask questions calmly and I will express my opinion in a respectful manner.
- I will not bully or abuse any Girl Scout members or their family members directly or through social media. I understand that there is zero tolerance for verbal, written, virtual, or physical bullying of any kind by GSGI.
- I will remember that others have ideas and thoughts, which may be different from mine, and that their ideas and thoughts are just as important as mine. I will be respectful of the thoughts and feelings of others.
- I will foster a safe and inclusive environment and will not discriminate any Girl Scouts (including their family), Volunteers, or Staff on the basis race, color, creed, religion, alienage or national origin, ancestry, citizenship status, age, disability, sex, marital status, familial status, veteran status, sexual orientation, gender identification, genetic information, public assistance, local human rights commission activity, or any other characteristic protected by applicable federal, state, or local laws.
- I understand that money earned from any Girl Scout activity is the property of the troop and should not be deposited into personal accounts or used for personal expenses. All deposits and withdrawals to the troop checking account should be related to Girl Scout activities, noted in the troop financial records, and monitored by the two signers.
Failure to follow the Girl Scouts of Greater Iowa’s Code of Conduct will result in any of the following corrective actions:
- Review of the Girl Scout Law/Promise with GSGI staff members and apology to all involved, if needed.
- A discussion about improvements needed at all future Girl Scout events, including troop meetings and confirmation of change in conduct.
- Transition to another participation option or reduced volunteer opportunities within GSGI. This will be determined through a discussion with GSGI staff members.
- Immediate dismissal as a Girl Scout member.
While any Code of Conduct violations are being investigated by Girl Scouts of Greater Iowa, your troop may be put on hold for some or all troop activities. This decision will be communicated to all troop leaders, in writing.
At any point, Girl Scouts of Greater Iowa upholds the right to make a final decision as deemed necessary based on severity of offense(s) and violations of this Code of Conduct or any other violation of GSGI policies, including the Blue Book of Basic Documents.
I have read and understand the responsibilities of a Girl Scout volunteer as noted above and agree to carry them out to the best of my ability. I understand that youth are the focus of the Girl Scout program and that it takes many caring adults to make Girl Scouts the best experience it can be.
*Violations of the Girl Scouts of Greater Iowa Code of Conduct should be reported to the council by emailing info@gsiowa.org. GSGI staff take violations seriously and will take the necessary measures to investigate and determine the appropriate corrective action for the Code of Conduct violation(s). At times, this may contain information that cannot be shared with others due to privacy practices.

- I will remember that others have ideas and thoughts, which may be different from mine, and that their ideas and thoughts are just as important as mine. I will be respectful of the thoughts and feelings of others.
- I will foster a safe and inclusive environment and will not discriminate any Girl Scouts (including their family), Volunteers, or Staff on the basis race, color, creed, religion, alienage or national origin, ancestry, citizenship status, age, disability, gender, marital status, familial status, veteran status, sexual orientation, gender identification, genetic information, public assistance, local human rights commission activity, or any other characteristic protected by applicable federal, state, or local laws.

- A discussion about improvements needed at all future Girl Scout events, including troop meetings and confirmation of change in conduct. Parental supervision may be required at all events moving forward.
- Transition to another participation option within GSGI as an individually registered Girl Scout (Juliette/IRG) or a different troop. This will be determined through a discussion with GSGI staff members and may involve troop leader feedback.
- Immediate dismissal as a Girl Scout member.
At any point, Girl Scouts of Greater Iowa upholds the right to make a final decision as deemed necessary based on severity of offense(s) and violations of this Code of Conduct or any other violation of GSGI policies, including the Blue Book of Basic Documents.
I have read and understand the responsibilities of a Girl Scout as noted above and agree to carry them out to the best of my ability. Troops may also require additional agreements or guidelines that must be followed.
