Hundreds of Girls Gear Up to “See the World” At Girl Scout Camp Sacajawea this Summer!

Special Camp Preview to take place at Family Fun Festival on May 25th

BOONE, Iowa - With camp counselors from countries like Germany, France, and the United Kingdom, cultural dance sessions, and tons of local travel opportunities, hundreds of girls throughout Greater Iowa are getting ready to “see the world” at Girl Scouts of Greater Iowa (GSGI) Camp Sacajawea this summer!

GSGI is ecstatic to kick off the 2013 camp season, where girls learn important lessons about trust, team-building, friendship, and confidence in fun and unique ways!

Camp Sacajawea in Boone, one of GSGI’s three camps, is offering a number of options full of world flavor. Girls will also spend the summer with camp counselors from seven different countries, marking it the most culturally diverse summer Camp Sacajawea has ever seen. Additionally, they will have the chance to take cultural dance sessions from across the globe!

"By hiring international staff, we are able to teach girls about different cultures, languages, and backgrounds, while also providing them with outstanding role models,” Camp Sacajawea Director Laura Arrington said.

Camp Sacajawea will also be offering horseback riding, a long-time favorite in which girls learn skills many carry with them throughout their lifetimes.

Additionally, girls will be able to swim in Camp Sacajawea’s crystal clear swimming pool, tackle the low-challenge obstacle course, hike the beautiful trails, and take archery lessons. This year, younger campers will even have the chance to learn how to shoot arrows with our new “mini-bows,” designed just for them!

With a world of options at camp this summer, we know the 2013 season will be the best yet!

To kick off the camp season, we will be hosting a “Family Fun Festival” at Camp Sacajawea on Saturday, May 25th from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. At this fun and informative event, girls and their families will have the chance to tour camp, learn more about our events and programs, and make new friends! Activities will include (weather permitting): archery, crafts, face painting, climbing wall, GaGa Ball, balloon animals, and shopping at the Trading Post!  Attendees will also have the chance to grab a funny costume from our “costume closet” and have their photos taken! Contact Camp Director Laura Arrington to register by emailing her at or calling 515-729-1843.
