Community Troop Program Navigates Upcoming Girl Scout Year

“Safety first! That includes safety for our team as well as the girls and families we serve,” said Ngan Hoang, Director of Mission Outreach, when sharing her team’s plans for the upcoming year.

The Community Troop Program, started in 2018, brings Girl Scouting to communities that have struggled to start a troop in the past. Paid staff lead up to eight K-5 troops each, serving a wide variety of communities stretching from Des Moines and Marshalltown, to Perry and Sioux City.

“Community Troop managers will pre-record activities for girls to watch and follow at their own pace and time. On alternate weeks, virtual meetings will be held for the troops to meet and share what they learned, catch up with their troop members, and do mini interactive activities,” Hoang said.

This year’s troop experience will look a bit different, but that isn’t stopping the Outreach team from building and growing. With funding from the Deardorf Charitable Foundation, the Community Troop Program will extend into the Fort Dodge area this fall to start two new troops, serving up to 50 new Girl Scouts. The team is also testing the waters for a Cadette-level Community Troop by adding a middle school troop in Sioux City.

The goal is to serve 500 girls in grades K-5 in the 2020-2021 Girl Scout year.

So, how can you help?

Donate Supplies on Amazon – A priority of outreach initiatives is making Girl Scouts accessible for girls. Community Troop Managers provide corresponding supplies for each activity they plan and coordinate with parents and school partners to have monthly curbside pickups for supplies. Due to Covid-19 limitations, supplies are packaged individually and replenished on a monthly basis. Visit the Outreach Amazon Wishlist to purchase supplies that are mailed directly to Girl Scouts of Greater Iowa.

Virtual Field Trips – The Outreach team is working hard to find virtual field trip and/or guest speakers for the Community Troops. If you are interested in collaborating or hosting a virtual field trip for local Girl Scouts, please email
