Ready to learn about farming? Check out this exciting program, created through collaboration with DuPont Pioneer!

We already know there wouldn't be any Iowa farms without farmers, but did you know our farms are also supported by scientists and engineers? If you like science and math, Ag-Journey is a great program for you and your troop! Through Ag-Journey you can learn about the science of agriculture and how you can change the world through an ag-science career. 

As a companion of It's Your Planet - Love It! you will discover how you can change the world through food, science, conservation, and careers. A mix of hands-on experiments, girl activities, and Iowa facts bring agriculture to life for everyone in your troop!

Troops receive a bag of resources to keep, the Ag Journey volunteer guide, patch, and fun activities for girls.

Hands-Only CPR | Grades K-12

Sponsored by the Iowa Heart Foundation, GSGI is thrilled to offer several Hands-Only CPR Program Kits to our troops and groups. These kits include supplies to train Girl Scouts in performing Hands-Only CPR in the event of a medical emergency. 

After your troop/group completed the program, takes the post-program survey, and returns the kit to the council, you'll receive a patch for each girl!

CyberStart is an online series of challenges that allows students to act as cyber protection agents to solve realistic problems and puzzles and explore exciting cybersecurity topics.

Girl Code | Grades K-12

Girl Coders offers entry-level coding patches to inspire young girls to experience STEM in positive and empowering ways. No prior coding experience needed for Girl Scouts or volunteers! Once a girl has completed a program, girls can then request a free patch on that subject.

Think Like a Citizen Scientist | Grades K-12

Citizen science is the idea that everyone can contribute to scientific research by collecting data for scientists to use! In the Think Like a Citizen Scientist Journey, girls will become citizen scientists themselves, learning about how to observe, collect data, and analyze data. Maybe your girls will collect cloud readings for NASA or monitor streams!

Field Trips

You can go on a Girl Scout adventure that works for your troop’s schedule!

We’ve made it easy by setting up field trip opportunities with organizations across the council. Simply have your troop leader reach out using the information below, and set up a great trip with your Girl Scout sisters!

Group sizes vary. Contact organization listed for details.

Please note: All registrations are made with the participating Field Trip Partners and fees are paid directly to them. Activities are not planned, led or supervised by Girl Scouts of Greater Iowa staff. Recommended girl/adult ratios must be met and are the responsibility of leaders and parents.

High Adventure Activity Sites

Sites listed below do not require a Horseback Riding Activity Application - they have been approved by Girl Scouts of Greater Iowa.

Chasing Laurels - Horseback Riding (Mingo) - K-12

Hey Girl Scouts! Ready to saddle up for a new adventure? Join Chase Corley, who has close to 30 years of experience, at Chasing Laurels to earn your Horseback Riding Badge. You will gain the skills you need to feel confident and comfortable around horses and even take a ride!

When you schedule a time with Chasing Laurels, they will work with the groups to provide drinks and a snack. As a BONUS: Chasing Laurels will provide each Girl Scout with a FREE riding lesson, to be used on a future date.

Everyone attending must print and sign a waiver.

Clinics will take between 2-2.5 hours (instruction and ride time). Clinics will be held rain or shine. Girl Scout groups are welcome to bring lunch to enjoy at the stables, or arrange with Chasing Laurels to have snacks and drinks available. Please no tag-a-longs, as this program is intended for Girl Scouts only.

Cost: $40 per Girl Scout (Junior Horseback Riding badge earned, however the badge will need to be purchased in the Girl Scout Retail Store)

Field Trips
Arbor Day Farms - Nebraska City

Arbor Day Farm offers coordinated programs and activities for Girl Scouts at all levels - from tree adventure and Arbor Lodge Mansion tours, to badge work tours including the Brownie Bugs badge, Junior Flowers badge, and Cadette Trees badge.

Available Year-Round: Monday - Saturday 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.; Sunday 11:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Des Moines Botanical Garden

Visit the Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden with your Junior Girl Scout troop to grow their love of nature. We offer a variety of hands-on programs throughout the entire year to complete steps of the Junior Gardener and Flower badges.

Dojo Family Martial Arts Bully Awareness and Protection Class - Des Moines

This class teaches girls how to be prepared and handle a bully situation in a positive and non-violent way.

The Do Space - Omaha

Learn all about the technology and resources at the Do Space, from coding to 3D printing and everything in between! You'll take a 30-minute tour, followed by a 40-minute hands on tech activity.

Innovators Academy - Ankeny

 Innovators Academy is a makerspace that offers technology, robotics, engineering, and woodworking classes taught by an experienced teacher.

Innovators Academy can help girls with any Robotics badges in the Daisy, Brownie, Junior, Cadette, Senior, and Ambassador levels. They can also help with any Digital Movie Making, Entertainment Technology, and Woodworking badges. Girls can work on any Daisy, Brownie, or Junior Engineering badges. And they can also help with any Cybersecurity or Netiquette badges for Daisy, Brownie, Junior, or Cadette levels.

Earn either your Brownie Painting or your Brownie Pottery Badge in a workshop that includes gallery exploration and lots of hands-on fun in the art studio. The Painting Badge can be earned in 1 session, the Pottery Badge would need to be done in 2 sessions. Chaperones must be with the girls at all times.

Nelson Pioneer Farm & Museum - Oskaloosa

1.     Nelson Pioneer Farm and Museum

Daniel and Margaret Nelson settled their farm in 1843. They raised six children here. Two Civil War veteran mules made their home with the family. In 1958 when grandchildren Roy and Lillian died, the farm became the home to the Mahaska County Historical Society.

Since 1960 they have been honoring the rural pioneer, sharing his life and her thoughts through the place they lived, the skills they had and the items they left behind. 

A visit to Nelson Pioneer Farm and Museum is a walk in the past. Join them Tuesday through Sunday every week for a quiet self-guided exploration or come on a special event day for programs and presentations of days gone by.  Many events include hands-on activities.

Five Monkeys Inc. - Des Moines

Come get creative!  Five Monkeys Inc offers hundreds of ceramic items for you to paint!  Items start at $10.  Studio fee $6 - includes 2 hours of studio time, glazing and firing of your items. 

Troop outings get 1/2 off studio fee. If they are scheduled outside of normal studio hours there is a 10-person minimum.
