Story County Troops Honored with Award for Food Bank Project

Eleven girls, two troops, one city, huge impact.  When the girls of Troop 28 and Troop 150 started working on their respective Bronze and Silver awards, they meshed these together to develop an outstanding plan.  With the help of three local food pantries and other local organizations, the girls created 50 healthy recipes for a cookbook, entitled You Are What You Eat, using many foods found at the pantries.

To make sure that families who visit the pantries can afford the cookbooks, the girls sold them in their community to cover future printing costs. For their project, the troops were honored with the 2013 Outstanding Youth Philanthropist Award for Story County on November 14! You can read more about them here. Congratulations, girls!

Graduating beyond Girl Scouts

Girl Scouting made such an impact on Katie Jacobsen of St. Charles, that she’s still involved in Campus Scouts as a freshman at Iowa State University.

Earning her Gold Award in 2013 led Katie on towards winning the National Young Woman of Distinction Award in 2013 as a senior in high school.

Once college came around, she knew she was going to keep going with Girl Scouts.

“Girl Scouts has given me so many opportunities that I would never have had as part of any other organization. Girl Scouting is not just something for girls to do after school until they’re ‘too old.’ It’s something that sticks with us for a lifetime!"

Save the Date: LEGO League Regionals

Come cheer on FIRST® LEGO® League  (FLL®) LEGO League teams  made up of our own Girl Scouts during regional competitions on December 7 and 14.

We have multiple teams competing across the state, so be sure to visit them in Cedar Falls, Council Bluffs, Des Moines, Estherville, Oskaloosa, Sioux City and even Omaha! You can find specific event information on the Iowa State Regional Qualifiers page.

Teams that advance go on to the state competition in January – and for the last several years, Girl Scouts have made a great showing at the state competition! Way to go, girls!
