Girl Stories: Quote Heard 'Round the Nation —

Sophia, a Girl Scout Daisy from Polk City, and her mother, Mary, wanted to share with us how Girl Scouting makes her feel as her troop began working on their 5 Flowers, 4 Stories, 3 Cheers for Animals Journey.

Mary sent us this wonderful story:

“Today, my first grader got dressed up in a plaid skirt, pink butterfly shirt and plastic play-heels.  With one hand on her hip, and the other holding a sparkly purple purse, she asks me, ‘Mom, do I look like a Girl Scout?’

‘No honey.  Because Girl Scouts isn't about what you look like, it's about what you act like and who you are.  Do you understand?’

She nodded and walked to the bathroom mirror.  I thought she was there to just look at how cute her outfit was.  But then I hear her sing:  ‘I am a Girl Scout.  And like a flower, I am different.  I am unique.  I am strong.  I am smart.  I am beautiful.  I am a Girl Scout.’

Thank you for the journeys and guide books that help me lead girls into discovering their world and its possibilities.  This is why I volunteer with Girl Scouts.  I want all girls to look in the mirror and see who they are not through anyone's eyes but their own.”

We shared Sophia’s words on our Facebook page, and from there Girl Scouts USA shared it on their own page! Sophia’s quote got 2,101 likes, 61 comments, and 804 shares! Thank you to Sophia and Mary, her mother, for sharing the true meaning of Girl Scouting.
