Each summer, nearly 3,000 Girl Scouts experience the joys found on
the shores of Camp Tanglefoot on Clear Lake and the wooded trails of
Camp Sacajawea near Boone. Camp provides a space for girls to
disconnect from technology, learn from people with different
perspectives, and try high-adventure activities that push them outside
their comfort zones.
Data shows that the impact camp has on girls is endless:
- 70% of Girl Scout Camp Alum say camp was critical in the development of their confidence and self-understanding.
- 74% of Girl Scout Camp Alum say camp helped them establish their ability to persevere in the face of challenges.
In a season of s’mores, swimming, star-gazing, and silly camp songs, it’s hard to imagine that many girls in our communities lack the opportunity to participate in outdoor activities this summer. Girls will miss the opportunity to attend summer camp due to socio-economic factors, transportation limitations, or lack of an adult mentor in their lives.
Girl Scouts of Greater Iowa provides camp scholarships for girls living below the poverty line. Scholarships are 100% locally funded by compassionate supporters like you. In 2018, 142 girls received scholarships to attend camp and 22 girls received transportation to and from camp. There is a growing population of girls who need assistance paying for and traveling to camp. You can help get them there.
Girls need camp now more than ever. Your support ensures all girls can experience the joys of camp. As we approach the 2019 summer season, please consider donating, so more girls can attend camp this year than ever before.
